The year of 2017 has proven more exciting for families in the Community of Mauldin at the Mauldin Cultural Center than ever before. This year included packaging meals for the hungry by the Rotary Club for over 17,000 meals sent to Haiti for hungry families and summer concerts enjoyed by many. Entertainment in the auditorium and classes in the arts ranging from guitar, dancing, painting, sculpting, wood carving, and hosting a variety of community meetings and functions. The Mauldin Rotary Club began meeting at the Mauldin Cultural Center when the restoration began for the classes and arts several years ago.
The Mauldin Rotary Club recognized the need for more accommodations for families as they continue to validate the “downtown Mauldin” feeling as they come out to enjoy more and more activities throughout the year. A portion of the fundraising totals of the Mauldin Rotary Club for 2016 and 2017 were designated toward the enhancement of more “family-friendly” areas on the campus of the Mauldin Cultural Center.
And so the story has been developing throughout 2016 and into 2017 toward the goal of the new Mauldin Rotary Club Family Picnic Grounds.
There have been upgrades ranging from additional parking and sidewalks for walking trails as we now prepare for the installation of new picnic tables for adults and kids. Additional arbors and swings will be added to allow families to enjoy bringing a picnic out and having time together. There is intentional “green space” to allow tossing the football or frisbees or just playing freely as families focus more on spending time together.
The Mauldin Rotary Club has made the final contribution to the City of Mauldin for the completion for arriving in mid-December of this year.
An interesting feature of the new area will be a “tree bench” built by one of our Rotarians, Jeff Tewell. The bench will include the 4 basic truths on which the Rotary operates, of all the things Rotarians think, say and do:
- Is it the Truth?
- Is it Fair to all concerned?
- Will it Build Good Will and better friendships?
- Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?
As the twelve days of Christmas approach the Mauldin Community the anticipation of the long-awaited Mauldin Rotary Family Picnic Area will be taking shape as installation begins. A special ceremony of dedication by the Mauldin Rotary Club and the City of Mauldin will be planned to open this area “officially” for the community.
