Francis David Thompson received the Order of the Palmetto from Governor Henry McMaster on Sunday, October 1 at First Baptist Mauldin. This is the highest award that can be presented to a South Carolinian by their State. Representative Garry Smith presented the award to Thompson upon the request of the Governor.
Francis Thompson has provided extensive service to the Palmetto State and the Mauldin Community for decades. He is a Korean War veteran and was a charter member of Mauldin’s Masonic Lodge. Thompson taught fifth grade boys Sunday school for over sixty years using vivid, concrete examples to relate Bible stories. He was essential to the ministry of the Greenville Baptist Association’s Camp Marietta for RA boys and GA girls.
Mr. Thompson is active with Gideons International and Habitat for Humanity. He is widely known as a disaster-relief volunteer for the Red Cross serving in sixteen major disasters, including hurricanes, tornados, flooding and fires.
Reverend Wade Leonard:
The scriptures teach us in James 1:22 that we should not “merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” For more than 80 years Francis Thompson has lived this out in our community and for all the generations to come. We are so blessed to celebrate this award with him.
