Two South Carolina based community initiatives, Feed & Seed + Farm to Belly, have teamed up to help fight childhood obesity. Your vote this week in USA Today Network’s “A Community Thrives” program may result in a $50,000 or $100,00 grant in support of these programs. But you must act before noon, Friday, May 12th. Here’s the link:
The Feed & Seed program, which connects the wholesale marketplace to seasonal farm products, focuses on the ten counties of Upstate South Carolina. Its operating partners – Bacon Brothers Food Group, SC Bakeroom, and Due South Coffee Roasters – purchase and use the raw materials from our regional farms to create menu items.
Farm to Belly is a program aimed at getting fresh vegetables into our school systems. Through it, low-income families are also given the opportunity to receive free, fresh, local foods along with simple kid-friendly recipes. It currently serves 300 families in Greenville, and hopes to expand to thousands of families across the state.
Feed & Seed has applied for a $100,000 grant from USAToday to support Farm to Belly. USA Today’s “A Community Thrives” program is intended to empower community members to take on local challenges and share these ideas on a national platform. It will select 10 entries among each contest category, and they will be judged and possibly awarded a $50,000 or $100,000 grant on or around May 28.
Don’t forget to click on the link above to vote. You can vote once a day until 11:59am this Friday, May 12th! Please share this story with friends and family, and ask them to vote daily as well.
